Every time I have a few hours to spare, I grab my kids and run towards a nearby museum or art gallery. I know, I know, You’re probably thinking: “Uh Huh, but you are an artist. It’s normal for you to go to these places.” That is true, but please bear with me on this one.
While we could go to a park and sweat away the energy bursting to get out of my children, we choose to enlighten them with culture. Art serves as a shield in many occasions. For example, I use it as an escape valve to get things that are bothering me out of my chest. Imagine what a pure soul, like a child’s, can get out of those intimate moments between them and art.
Why Art?
An art piece makes them wonder why the artist created the piece, what does it mean, etc… Art helps them develop their creativity and communication skills. It also gives them another thing they can be and become. The shield that art provides, acts as a free pass out of boredom. That dreaded time were anyone can loose a child. Especially when they are bigger and the media/internet/friends/pop culture tells them what things they can do with their time (not always a good thing).
So, instead of waiting until Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber tell my kids what to wear, or what to do, I prepare them with the creativity and deep thought that art creates in all of us. When the time comes, they’ll have a strong will and a self awareness that will help them in choosing what to do and who to listen to. It did wonders for me and it’s one of those lessons learned that will be passed on.
So next time you have to choose between going to the park or going to the museum, think about it twice.

I use writing to get things out of my chest. Thankfully I have someone like you that makes sure it looks clean once it is written.
I had never seen the fact that art can help them establish themselves way before pop culture can have more influence over them. Interesting factor to mitigate the noise that might be around your children.

You bet! Art helps develop a healthier view on things. Makes you wonder, appreciate, think and analyze. Pop Culture shows you exactly what they want you to see, think and learn.
