Parents today are busy multi-taskers committed to doing the best for their children.  Time has become a parent’s most valuable commodity.  That’s why sites like this one are a great tool providing you with the most current resources.  Be sure to like our Facebook page as well as the Twitter account to keep you updated.

Today’s post is about Acronyms.  An acronym is a form of abbreviation to save space and time when typing.  It is a word formed from the initial letters of the several words in the name.

For example: United States of America is USA.

When texting or chatting the goal is to say as much as possible in as few letters as possible, which has created an explosion of acronym terms.

It’s important to be familiar with these terms because texting isn’t just for teens anymore.  If your children are old enough to have their own phone or begin social networking online you will notice they spend lots of time chatting on the computer and texting.

Some places where your children will use acronyms are: phone texting, chatting, chat rooms, IM, messaging, instant messaging, facebook, twitter, myspace or email and email chatting.

Keeping up with ever changing technology might feel challenging when it includes parents learning and deciphering a language full of abbreviations and symbols used in text messaging.  We are here to help by bringing awareness.  We need to arm the good guys with knowledge.

There are many more acronyms than are on this list but these are the red flags every parent should be aware of.  These are codes that kids use to warn others that their parents are around, to talk about sex, drugs or arrange a meeting.  They can also be used by strangers to collect information or to arrange a first meeting.  Last but not least to be aware of any sexually explicit conversations that may be occurring.
