Happy Mother’s Day to You!

Three years ago I was pregnant

Mother’s Day 2010, I remember being ill and thinking I was just fighting another bought of kidney stones. I remember dropping off a plant to my mom and her telling me that I looked like shit. For about two weeks prior to Mother’s Day, I was hugging the toilet bowl and refusing to see a doctor because the stones were going to go away. I remember our dog JuanGa, not leaving my side as I battled these kidney stones. The week after Mother’s Day came and I finally said to Raul,  ”Let’s call Freddy” our friend who lived close by and a doctor. I remember going to get blood work on a Friday and the next day Raul opening up the results. Before our friend could come over and read them, we read that we were going to be parents. It seems so long ago, but it wasn’t.

I was shocked, stunned, cried, and was in denial for a long time. I was not ready for the commitment and change but it was going to happen. It was our choice to be parents and we had been told by several people that in 2010 we were going to be the parents of a girl. I was skeptical about the news but Daniela was born later that year. I had to see her to believe that she was really coming. When I went on vacation with Raul, before Daniela was born, I remember a man telling me that I was going to know what love really was when Daniela arrived. I of course was like, yeah that is what they tell me. I was seven months pregnant and scared to admit that perhaps his words and the words of others were going to be true.

Daniela shows me in all sorts of ways that she loves me; she rubs my toe or arm when I bump into something and she asks,  ”Estas Bien? Te Duele? ” Her instinct to help kicks in and I know that one day she will pay it forward to others. She helps me get in and out of the shower and hands me my towel. She will lick me instead of kiss me and laughs about it when I say, “Yuck.”  All the things we do for her, she is doing with us. It is amazing how she interacts with JuanGa and gives him rubs when he hears a strange noise. I think my biggest fear was accepting this change and it took me a long time to realize that she was here to stay. I count my blessings everyday that she is walking, screaming, crying, learning, and loving us. With help from other women and Raul, I started to learn how to appreciate those special moments where she showed me compassion and love.

My cooking assistant

Since I became a mom, all these little ideas come out of my head of what we could do to teach Daniela all sorts of things from painting, to crafting, singing, dancing, and even real life situations. I remember having a conversation with my neighbors about potty training Daniela. I told them she was attempting it but that we were not pushing her to do so. I did mention how she was learning other things like cutting mushrooms, tomatoes, and even helping me bake. I am glad that she learned how to cut because for a few days I was not able to cook or bend my fingers due to an injury. Daniela stepped up to the challenge of helping me until her grandma arrived from Connecticut for a visit. One of the neighbor’s mentioned that I was probably glad I taught Daniela how to cut instead of using the bathroom. Although my girl was not potty trained, I am glad the neighbor realized that Daniela was helping me with everyday chores. (She used a plastic knife with supervision from me, I gave her a pot, she put all ingredients in the pot, and I stirred.)

Never thought I'd see a little one next to mine.

Never thought I’d see a little one next to mine.

Strong Women all around me

Since moving to an apartment complex, I have been blessed to have women who are moms to children of all ages and moms to four-legged, sentient beings. We have had conversations of all types and I was missing that type of bond with women since I moved to Puerto Rico. I have kept in touch with all the strong women from my childhood and adulthood; some who are moms, soon-to-be moms, some who aren’t, those who have chosen to adopt their husband’s children, and those who are moms to four-legged beings.

I have met new women and their families via social platforms and community groups. I read about the triumphs and when they have hit roadblocks and I feel as though we are all on the same journey of making the most of what is in front of us. I read about women making the best decisions they can for their children whether it be with their spouses, partners, co-parents, or by themselves.

If you want to read about strong women and what they do every day to ensure the happiness and health of their children and how they support other women and families, please consider joining these groups on Facebook and wishing them a Happy Mother’s Day:

An Angel for Ellie : Hilary and Jim update their surviving twin daughter’s progress on a daily basis. Her name is Ellie. Read about how they were diagnosed with TTTS and their journey thus far. A little angel guides Ellie from above and her name is Gracie.

Nick Collazo Stay Strong Fight Hard Team Nicholas : Lillian and Luis are from my hometown in Connecticut. Their son is battling childhood cancer. Their oldest daughter is a survivor. This is a very strong family with a wonderful community of friends and family holding benefits for them in order to help them financially and emotionally.

TTTS : This stands for Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Our parent mentors, Vanessa and Gabriel, started this group on Facebook to support other families that have gone through or are currently going through the same experience. Jesus guides their surviving twin, Gustavo, from above. These families are amazing and if you follow the group, you will see what community and family really means.

Imani Corbin Erbs Palsy Fight : Maritza and Sebastian are family members currently navigating the world of Erb’s Palsy with their daughter Imani. I wrote about her and she finally had her surgery today. This is going to be a long road for my family members, but I have faith that Imani will come out winning.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!

Happy Birthday Raul!

Raul's Happy Birthday Picture

Today is Raul’s 33rd birthday! We are so happy that he is in great health to be by our sides everyday. At times when things become hectic with Daniela crying, me barking, and the dog whining, he has the gift of difusing major meltdowns from all of us. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful and patient human! And yes he is way more patient than I am.  Daniela and our dog JuanGa are very lucky for this special gift!

Vegan Cake

We asked our friend Maria from Dolce Maria Sweet Creations, (located in Caguas, Puerto Rico) to make a birthday cake for Raul that was totally vegan. The frosting was made from dark chocolate and decorated with avocado! The cake was vanilla flavored but almost tasted like it had a hint of coco flavor as well. In order for the decoration on the cake to be vegan friendly, Maria was a genius in using avocado.

Leave a little message in the comments to Raul or send a message to him on Twitter at @rj_c!

We love our Papá Hero!

Pictures thanks to Raul and I ;)

Safe Travels Imani, Sebastian, and Mari

UPDATE: 05-10-2013 Our little cousin Imani had her surgery today. According to mom and dad, she did well and now the journey of healing and therapy begin. Thanks to all of those who were sending positive thoughts and prayers to our little cousin and her parents.

UPDATE: My cousin’s daughter got the croup the week of the surgery and the day before the surgery, they had to cancel and reschedule for May 10th. So we are hoping and wishing for health uptil the surgery date.

We have been posting information about my little cousin’s surgery all month long on Facebook in hopes to help my cousin Sebastian and his wife Mari with expenses. The day for her surgery is on the 29th and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for those who donated, shared, and used their words of encouragement for the Corbin Family.

While other’s are celebrating Easter week or weekend, Imani will be undergoing surgery to replace/repair her arm in a condition called Erb’s Palsy. I ask a small favor on my behalf; send good vibes to her family on Imani’s Facebook page. We need to let Sebastian and Mari know that there are other parent’s who are with them in spirit.

I can’t imagine what is going through their heads at this moment, but I can only send my words of encouragement to them via this blog.

To Mari, Sebastian, and Imani

I have not had the chance to meet you in person little lady, but I hope one day we will be able to hug and kiss you. Your parents have shown that through this journey, their love and unity is what will help you heal.  They truly are PapaHeroes! You have an army of people who are going to be sending lots of good vibes and thoughts to you! Warm hugs and safe travels. We will be awaiting good news from your parents later this weekend. Here is a picture of a bunny to make you smile!

Love your cousins,

Lucy, Daniela, and Raul!

Imani's New Cast

Donate

UPDATE 02-27-2013 I spoke to our cousin last night and he is still looking for donations for Imani’s surgery. The insurance company confirmed that $1500.00 or possibly more, will be their out-of-pocket expense. The money already donated will go to that but they still need money for co-pays, travel, hotel, and food expenses. Any donations are still welcome as they try to raise enough funds to cover the cost of the trip or any unforeseeable circumstances. Please consider donating at least $5.00 to Imani’s donation fund on @You_Caring. We thank all of those who have already donated and shared this information with their communities.

UPDATE 02-09-2013 : We have great news! We just checked the donations page and saw that the goal was met and even surpassed! People are still donating to Imani and her family! Please continue to share this news.

As I said in one comment from another family going through the same Erb’s Palsy Fight, “It takes a community to help. I am just doing a small part.” But we can continue to bring awareness because there are other families going through the same thing with their children and it also happens to adults.

Thanks to @You_Caring for tracking our progress and communicating with us via Twitter and Facebook.

We usually write about our own children at Papaheroes and the things we learn from them during our parenthood journey. From time to time other people’s children have taught us lessons in life and we have shared their stories on the blog. Children like Caine Monroy who built an arcade out of cardboard amazed us because of his talent and drive to create something fun out of scraps.  Jaden’s Mini-Orbiter search during Christmas had us elated when @BabyEinstein pulled through to deliver this discontinued toy for Christmas.

The Corbin Family

Imani Corbin holds a special place in my heart because she is family. My cousin Sebastian and his wife Maritza brought little Imani into this world in June of 2012. I had been in communication with my cousin via Facebook since 2010 and unfortunately one of the last times I saw my cousin was for his dad’s funeral.

Sebastian and Maritza were going to bless the family with another  little girl. Their lives were changed when Imani was diagnosed with Erb’s Palsy . Since her diagnosis, she has gone to therapy with her mom and dad and visited several doctor’s specializing in this field.

Boston Bound to Children’s Hospital

This past  Sunday while millions of families were glued to the Superbowl game, my cousins were driving from Connecticut to Boston, Massachusetts to see Peter M. Waters, MD, Chief of Clinical Orthopedics at Children’s Hospital Boston.

Imani after her long road trip from Connecticut to Boston

At the appointment, they were told that Imani would have to undergo surgery to help repair/replace her C5, C6 and some C7 nerves on March 29th. Here is a video to help you understand what Erb’s Palsy is from Dr. Waters. You can continue viewing more videos on the same channel on YouTube regarding Erb’s Palsy.

A little help goes a long way

Being told that your young baby has to have surgery can become stressful and emotional for a family. Sebastian, Maritza, and Imani have chosen to fight! I know that parents find strength from deep within their souls when the average person buckles under the slightest pressures of life. The drive my cousin and his wife have to make sure Imani is given the best care is something I admire. When I read about how they would have to go to Boston for the surgery, I thought that maybe as a community of friends and family, we could help them out.

Erb's Palsy Awareness

Imani’s Erb’s Palsy Bracelet. See post for details on purchasing.

My cousin has set up a donations page for travel, lodging, food, tolls, co-pays, and other expenses for this trip from Connecticut to Massachusetts. A little help goes a long way and if you would like to help them out, just go to this link  and donate the amount you can. Even if you can’t donate, join Imani’s Facebook page and follow her progress and journey. The family is also selling Erb’s Palsy Awareness bracelets for $20.00. Five of those dollars will go to Imani’s fund. Inquire about the bracelets with my cousins via Facebook.

Donate

I will definitely be updating you with Imani’s progress and hope that this surgery in March is successful. We know that the road to recovery is going to be long, but I know many friends and family members will be there for Imani and her parents.

If you know of successful surgeries and recoveries, please share them with us in the comments below or share them with Imani on her Facebook page.

Independence One Toddler Step at a Time

Tiny Baker

As a parent, one of your main goals should be to have your children go on their own and embrace the world without you needing to be there.

Every time my daughter accomplishes something that gives her more independence, I get extremely happy.

Coaching her to build Courage

I don’t want to overprotect my daughter because I know it can halt her growth in many aspects. I want her to build the courage to do things and not have to wait for anyone.

I want her to pave her own path.  Only then can she change the world by making sure she guides herself and expects more of herself every day.

Progress Makes me Smile

On multiple occasions I have seen how my daughter opens the iPad and searches for her favorite applications. Other things she does are related to self sustaining herself in the future from attempting to put on her clothes, to cooking with her mom by cutting mushrooms, and even making cupcakes or muffins; she is always seeking ways to do things on her own.

She will ask for help when she does not get the result or can’t find something. For the most part she is exploring and observing what she wants to learn and do next..

I smile when I see that she has discovered something new to do on the iPad or that she figured out how to put on a piece of wardrobe. On most occasions her mom and I have taught her how to do certain tasks but  most of the time she has figured it out on her own by observing me like inserting her favorite movie into the Blueray/Dvd.

I remember reading in Steve Jobs Biography (Affiliate link) that one of his goals was to make the iPad and iOS devices very intuitive and easy to handle. I wonder what other things can we do during our days with our daughter that things can be intuitive and she can learn on her own vs. us taking her over every detail.

I have to tell Steve that based on my personal experiences with my daughter, I can’t see how they could have made it any easier it is our job now to get into that kind of thinking where critical tasks that our kids need to learn can become second nature to them early on.

As I see my daughter exploring new things and with progress, we are committed to keep the momentum going.

Everything will be Under Control, One day…

One day I want her to say Dad I have everything under control.

But until then I will handle the next task at being independent; potty training.

P.S. Thanks Aaron Manley (owner of  Motorphilia) for helping me understand this a lot better in a simple 45 minute conversation on your long term goals as a parent almost a year ago.

Natural Remedies for Mosquito Bites

Beach Chair and Solar Charger - photo by Raúl Colón

I know this post may seem  of subject if you live up North (It is Winter time)  but for us who live in a tropical environment, we get bitten by mosquitoes 365 days a year. Days ago my daughter was bitten 3 times in the elbow by mosquitoes and it brought me memories of when I use to feel the same way after being bitten by them as a kid.

My daughter was a bit stressed out because the bites where making her very uncomfortable.

I quickly grabbed my iPad and searched the Internet for Natural Mosquito remedies which we could use. Being a Vegan/Vegetarian family I really did not want to use any chemicals or pharmaceuticals.

I was able to find some for those painful mosquito bites and here are a few that made sense. I would like to share some of the ones I found with you:

Household Items

  • Vinegar
  • Dry Bar of Soap
  • Baking Soda & Water
  • Toothpaste
  • Salt to make (Salt Paste)

Plants, Fruits and Vegetables

  • Aloe
  • Onion
  • Raw Honey
  • Lime and/or Lemons
  • Garlic

I wonder if some of these could also be used as mosquito repellent but I guess that will be the subject for another post.

Do you use any other natural remedies for mosquito bites?

Update 12-11-2012 : Jaden and his parents have now opened up a Facebook Like Page. Please consider sharing the page with your friends and family members.  You can see pictures of Jaden and friends! You can also see a video of the Mini Orbiter in the post below.

This is a post from an acquaintance from my hometown of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

This was posted on Facebook and was asked to be shared. Leticia is looking for a specific toy that has been discontinued for her son Jaden who has Autism and Dwarfism. Please take the time to read her Christmas Wish as this Mini-Orbiter toy was what Jaden asked Santa  for Christmas. Lets hope that someone somewhere has a used one that can be sent to him before Christmas. You can contact Leticia through this blog if you happen to have the toy! Regards, Lucy

MEDIA ATTENTION NEEDED TO LOCATE DISCONTINUED TOY FOR AUTISTIC BOY WITH DWARFISM:

About Jaden

My son Jaden has both autism and dwarfism…in a nut shell he has had it rough since birth.

During the first years of his life he was not able to really speak, faced several serious surgeries and certainly never requested any presents. It just seemed that no toy was of interest to him. However, he is always so happy.
Every birthday and Christmas we have asked for his wish, with no response. We would just try to get him things that were age appropriate and hope he would play and enjoy them.

Jaden’s First Full Sentence

This past month he has been learning to talk about Christmas and what it means at his special school and one morning he woke me up at 5:00 a.m. and in a full sentence, which has never been possible for him, said “ Mommy, I want to go to the mall to see Santa to ask for planets that spin from Baby Mozart.” I was in shock and my husband and I have been relentlessly trying to find this for him. He loves to read about rockets and the solar system, so I was shocked that he would remember this specific toy from a video that he has not seen in years.

Mini Orbiter

Due to his autism he has a phenomenal memory and now that he is finally speaking at 7 years old this is the one thing he asks for by name.

Although I have tried the manufacturer, Rabbit Tanaka Corp of Texas and the Baby Einstein company they are not able to help as the mold to re-run the toy have been destroyed. At this point I am just trying to find a person with a used one who would be willing to sell it.I have tried to find a new or used Mini-Orbiter on all sites. I have even shown him other types of solar systems but he says “no, that’s not it, I need the one from Baby Einstein.”

This past Sunday we took Jaden to meet Santa and he actually spoke to him and made this request in person. I don’t want to see disappointment in his face if he does not receive this even though we know that may be the case.I have a photo of the mini-orbiter we are looking for.Whatever you are able to do to help me locate this item so that I may purchase it for my son would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.

The more people I can reach who might have this, the better his odds are of having his Christmas wish come true.

Thanks,

Leticia

Clean Up, Clean Up

Something I have always heard other parents complain is how kids leave things behind and they don’t pick up after themselves.

When our daughter started to walk and move on her own around the house it added to our daily  house chores.

As any other toddler, she tends to pick things up and then leave them at another spot when she finds a new interest in another object.

Thankfully Lucy (my other half) started to teach our daughter how to clean up after herself.

The Clean Up Song

Lucy made it fun for our daughter to pick things up by singing and teaching our daughter the clean up song. Lucy has an advantage of having worked as a teacher with kids and also went to school for that. When you add to the creativity she has, I can see how something I would have tried teaching our daughter, Lucy makes it 3 times as fun.

This past Saturday was Global Coastal Clean Up Day. Since we now live near the beach we saw many volunteers arrive at the beach ready to clean up what others have left behind.

The volunteers started from the San Juan Water and Beach Club hotel where many beach visitors including the guests of the hotel forget to clean up after themselves.

Leading by Example

We joined the group of volunteers by grabbing some gloves and trash bags. With our daughter in toe, Lucy and I picked up trash while our daughter watched us and entertained herself.

Teaching others including our children to do the right thing is something critical that we all forget every once in a while. What a better way to roll up your sleeves and do some community; help clean up the place we all love to walk in the morning and enjoy the sun for the rest of the day.

Big thanks to all the volunteers and the Scuba Dogs Society who took the time to clean the coast on a Saturday morning when they could have chosen to do something else.

This opportunity to join volunteers this past Saturday made me realize that I need to do more of this. This will eventually help my daughter and others understand the importance of why need to clean up after ourselves and how we can change the world by changing ourselves first.

So as my daughter now sings

“Clean Up Clean Up Everybody everywhere,

Clean Up Clean Up Everybody doYour Share”

Note: If there are any more opportunities for the Papaheroes to get involved in community work feel free to contact us and we can take a look at how we can support your cause.
